Why does leadership effectiveness matter?

A leader being highly effective is required for organizations to surpass competitors, retain talent, and be cost efficient. In the VUCA - volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous - world, a leader needs to adapt quickly so the business can capitalize on its window of opportunity. The leader also needs to shepherd employees away from frustration about the pace of change. And the leader must avoid stalled change initiatives.

Is there an assessment I can take to gauge my own leadership effectiveness?

Yes! Answer the following questions on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being Strongly Disagree and 5 being Strongly Agree.

  1. The last time I received bad news from one of my employees, I’m proud of how I responded.

  2. I believe it’s important for my employees to fail in order to grow.

  3. I’ve talked about my own development opportunities (weaknesses) with my staff.

  4. When my staff come to me asking for a solution, I first ask them what they would propose.

  5. I consistently model the behaviors I want my team to demonstrate.

Scoring matrix

  • 5-14 points – You may be hard on yourself (join the club!) so affirm yourself for taking this assessment and being honest. Take the highest scoring item and ask: How can I leverage this to improve my other scores just a bit? Remember progress is better than perfection! Your growth will be a great indication to your organization how great a leader you are!

  • 15-20 – This is a great result - You are modeling the art and science of leadership along with honesty on opportunities to improve your impact. Keep going!

  • 18-25 – I’m inspired by you! For your next challenge, ask an employee who is usually a naysayer and ask them to complete this for you. If you get a different score, that’s powerful learning!
